FSA sees increase in complaints

There has been an increase in the number of complaints sent to the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

According to statistics, between January and the end of June this year, there has been a two per cent rise in the number of complaints about financial firms.

The figure now sits at 1.51 million, 11 per cent of which were found to be dealt with in over eight weeks.

It was also discovered that there had been a fall in the number of complaints that were upheld – down from 40 per cent to 38 per cent.

The FSA has recently taken a tough stance on the issue of payment protection insurance (PPI).

In a ruling, it fined Swinton £770,000 for mis-selling PPI to customers.

The company now has to offer 350,000 customers a refund on their policies.

In its ruling, director of retail enforcement and financial crime at the FSA said that the company did not establish whether a customer needed PPI before recommending it.
