Date set for unfair bank charges decision

A date has been announced when a legal judgment will be made on thousands of contested bank charges by Britain's highest judicial body.

The Supreme Court, which sat for the first time last month, is set to reach a verdict next week on a test case brought by the Office of Fair Trading against a number of leading banks.

More than a million people are waiting on the decision to see if they are able to get bank refunds.

The legal battle has been going on since 2007, and new bank claims have been suspended until a final ruling is made.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has threatened to intervene on behalf of account holders in the ongoing dispute, and new powers for the Financial Services Authority to help claimants are expected soon.
