PPI claimants could benefit from Financial Services Bill

The government's new Financial Services Bill promises to deliver important reforms designed to benefit bank customers through more rights and improved information.

Thanks to the bill, customers and PPI claimants will be able to collectively challenge banks they feel have wronged them in court, while a new consumer financial education body will be established.

Kevin Mountford, head of banking at moneysupermarket.com, has broadly welcomed the bill, saying the new laws "could in reality help consumers and providers co-exist".

"We have witnessed the ongoing and lengthy activity surrounding unfair bank charges; if anything can speed up this process and provide consumers with a direct voice heard by the banks then this is an encouraging move," he commented.

Mr Mountford went on to say that, should the bill be passed, banks will have "greater incentive" to improve their practices and make sure they are transparent.

Speaking at the launch of the bill, chancellor Alistair Darling said the government had "learned important lessons" regarding the weaknesses of global banking.
