Loan Protection: Bankers 'returning to bad old ways'

A leading figure in the international economy has warned bankers in western countries that they risk a backlash from taxpayers after huge bailouts of the financial services sector.

Speaking at the annual Confederation of British Industry (CBI) conference in London, IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said that a return of a risky, speculating City should not be permitted.

He called for restraint and cautioned that a return to old habits would be dangerous as taxpayers are not prepared to countenance another bailout of the sector.

As well as demanding better regulation, Mr Strauss-Kahn gave backing to economic stimulus packages such as prime minister Gordon Brown's, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Last week, deputy governor for financial stability at the Bank of England Paul Tucker said that banks should be made to fund an insurance scheme against another financial crash in the future.
