Bank charges appeal rejected by Supreme Court
The Supreme Court has ruled in favour of banks over charges labelled as 'unfair'.
In a statement, president of the court Lord Phillips said that charges for going into an overdraft were a price which customers paid for otherwise free bank accounts.
The outcome of more than a million outstanding claims rested on today's decision, with all new bank claims being suspended for more than two years pending the result of the legal case.
The Office of Fair Trading, the government body which supports consumers, had been leading the case against the banks, defending its right to determine whether specific charges were fair or not.
Prime minister Gordon Brown last month called on banks to pay back charges which were levied unfairly on consumers.
