Payment Protection: 'Not enough women' working for banks

A leading bank executive has criticised his own industry for its sexist employment practices.

The Royal Bank of Scotland's human resources director Neil Foden, speaking to Personnel Today, said that female candidates are less likely to be appointed to senior roles.

He told the news provider: "It is the case that when you try in any large company to recruit a female finance director, it will be difficult to do. The number of women who can do the role is significantly smaller than the number of men."

He added that he believes setting targets for the number of women employees will not necessarily achieve the aim of making the industry more gender balanced: "Targeting would only work if you had a reasonable chance of success."

Last week, the recommendations of the Walker Review into the governance of banks called for more women to be given jobs within the financial sector.
