Bank Claim: Brits urged to save for a year for Christmas

Brits will get themselves into £8 billion worth of debt at Christmas.

That is according to statistics from, which have shown that 71 per cent of Brits intend to only use money they have available at the time to pay for Christmas presents.

Andrew Hagger, spokesperson of financial comparison site, said that people should start saving for Christmas the year before.

"It's getting used to putting something away each month, rather than relying on credit cards and then having to pay additional interest," he said.

"There are specific accounts out there called regular savings accounts. You put in a set amount each month – usually done by standing order – and then in 12 months you will get the interest on your savings."

According to the latest lending data from the Bank of England, consumer credit fell by a net £0.6 billion, below the previous six-month average -of £0.1 billion.
