Loan Insurance: Bankers warn EU on regulation

Bankers have said they will not tolerate new regulation imposed through the European Union.

Angela Knight, chief executive of the British Bankers' Association (BBA) seized on recent comments made by Nicolas Sarkozy describing Britain as the "loser" in the latest round of EU appointments.

Mr Sarkozy suggested that with a French appointee receiving the body's top job regulating financial services, Britain's banking sector could be on the receiving end of a swathe of new regulation to discourage risk-taking.

Speaking at a bankers' dinner in London, Ms Knight retorted: "If anyone in the European project thinks for a minute that they are capable of subverting the years of effort it took us to make the UK the world's financial centre, they are sadly mistaken."

She accused him of having undermined the EU with his hostile outburst against "Anglo-Saxon" bankers.

The board of directors of the Royal Bank of Scotland have threatened to resign this week in response to government plan to curb its bonuses.
