PPI reclaim: Top banker slams bonus tax

A leading bank executive has fiercely criticised chancellor Alistair Darling's suggestion that a windfall tax could be levied on bankers' bonuses this Christmas.

Robert Diamond, who is president of Barclays says that the plans could disadvantage London as a global financial centre

He believes the moves are politically motivated and aimed at grabbing the headlines, but could do untold damage to the financial services sector in the UK.

"It's very important to recognise the importance that major financial centres are balanced in terms of regulatory efforts around capital, around accounting, and around compensation," he told Bloomberg.

The chancellor is expected to announce a tax on bankers' bonuses in Wednesday's pre-budget statement, in which he outlines the government's economic plans in advance of the budget in the spring.

Last week, it emerged that Barclays would be increasing the salaries of its senior employees by as much as 150 per cent, with many now earning in excess of £300,000 excluding their annual bonus.
