PPI Reclaim: Bankers need 'culture change'

Chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling has called for a cultural shift in the UK's banking sector following yesterday's announcement of a one-off 50 per cent levy on bonus payments, Bloomberg reports.

Criticising the bonus culture which has prevailed at banks, he said in an interview with the news provider: "It's almost people think it's a given that you have to pay these very large sums of money or you can’t get on."

"Across the world we need to be a little more realistic and change the culture."

In yesterday's Pre-Budget statement he unveiled a tax on all bonuses above £25,000, affecting 20,000 employees in the financial services industry.

The government says the plan will raise more than £550 million which will be put towards creating new jobs for young people.
