Loan Protection: Bankers claim tax 'infringes human rights'

Bankers are hoping to claw back their Christmas bonuses by claiming that a one-off government bonus tax infringes their human rights, the Times reports today (December 11th).

The attorney general Baroness Scotland reportedly warned the Treasury that the government might lose if the levy is challenged in the courts.

In the Pre-Budget report earlier this week, chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling unveiled the government's bonus tax, which is due to affect 20,000 in the financial services sector and generate £500 million to create jobs for young people.

Many bank employees who stand to lose out are said to be seeking legal advice on ways to dodge the tax, but the government has given reassurances that it will close all possible loopholes.

Questions have also been raised over whether employees of financial services companies which are not banks or building societies will face the tax.

Firms specialising in private equity and fund management may be able to escape without paying the 50 per cent charge.
