Loan Insurance: Central banks meet to curb risk-taking

The central banks of many countries from across the world are gathering in Switzerland amid concern that the excessive risk-taking which triggered the 2008 financial crisis is making a return among bankers, the Financial Times reports.

An apparent resurgence in risk-taking will be top of the agenda as the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) meets in Basel.

In its invitation, the international organisation cited financial firms are "returning to the aggressive behaviour that prevailed during the pre-crisis period", the newspaper reported.

Some bank bosses will also be in attendance at the meeting, including representatives from BlackRock and Citigroup.

BIS has expressed concern that low interest rates have encouraged excessive risk-taking in banks by making it easy to borrow money easily for speculative investment.

The Bank of England's decision to hold interest rates at 0.5 per cent could potentially encourage this trend further.

This week, chairman of the Commons Treasury Select Committee John McFall MP warned that a return of bankers' risky behaviour could trigger another financial crisis and threaten economic recovery.
