Bank claim: Bankers face Commons grilling over bonuses

The Commons Treasury Select Committee is set to question bank bosses over the level of bonuses received by employees in the financial services sector, the Guardian reports.

Stephen Hester, chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), has been summoned to be grilled by the influential committee.

November's row over bonus payments was sparked when it emerged that RBS was due to pay out billions of pounds in bonuses despite the fact it remains majority-owned by the British taxpayer.

UK Financial Investments, the Treasury body which oversees the government's investment in banks, has the power of veto over bonuses paid out by RBS.

Hester was one of many bank bosses who publicly defended the payment of bonuses by banks.

Also summoned to be questioned by the committee is Eric Daniels, who caused controversy when he commented that his £1 million salary was "relatively modest".

This week, chair of the Treasury Select Committee John McFall made comments critical of bankers, describing them as not existing in the real world. He also warned against "business as usual".
