Credit Card Claim: Supermarkets' banking role growing

Supermarkets are taking on a bigger role as financiers and are making inroads into the banking sector.

That is according to a report by comparison website, which found that supermarket finance has overtaken traditional lenders and now perform best according to customer satisfaction surveys.

Its survey found that M&S and Tesco credit cards were top of the table for overall customer satisfaction (89.4 per cent), with Amex close behind on 88.6 per cent.

David Black, a banking analyst at research firm Defaqto said: "Tesco have said they are going to move into mortgages and current accounts. I think they are going to be a big threat in the current account world, particularly."

Last year, Sainbury's Finance announced that it was looking to "grow dramatically" by launching a new reward scheme that will see Sainsbury's shoppers rewarded for buying some of its core financial services products.
