Bank Charges: Boris does a u-turn on bankers' bonuses

The mayor of London Boris Johnson has done an apparent u-turn regarding his stance on the bankers' bonuses debate.

Last week the mayor warned that up to 9,000 bankers may be persuaded to leave the capital city to look for work abroad if the proposed supertax on bonuses of over £25,000 was imposed.

However, Mr Johnson's opinion seems to have come round full-swing after he told the Evening Standard he had personally written a letter to the chancellor urging him to enforce severe cut-backs within bonus schemes.

According to the news provider, the conservative mayor wrote that he was "personally shocked and indeed baffled by the persistence of an excessive bonus culture in some parts of the sector".

He urged bank chiefs to show "much stronger leadership" on the issue, which has caused uproar with taxpayers who last year paid for a government bail-out of the banks after they blackened the UK economy in their "banking crisis".

Not all of Mr Johnson's allies are convinced by his apparent backtracking however.

London Labour MP Karen Buck told the Guardian: "When push comes to shove Boris Johnson is in favour of words not action on bank bonuses."
