Bank Claim: Bankers hold a secret date with Darling

Bankers from across the UK and America are to attend a secret meeting with the chancellor Alistair Darling tomorrow.

The union will allegedly involve banking chiefs from the UK's HSBC, Barclays and Standard Chartered as well as executives from American banks such as JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley, according to the Times.

The group is expected to meet with the chancellor in Davos, where the world's financial leaders have gathered to discuss international banking reforms, in a bid to sway opinion.

It is expected the bankers will warn Mr Darling that they are opposed to reforms suggested by president Obama.

Bankers across the UK have already pleaded with the Government not to follow US proposals, claiming that strict regulations would drive bankers abroad.

Meanwhile Barclays president Bob Diamond attacked Obama's plans to "break-up" the largest banking groups, saying that big businesses need big financial institutions to back them.

The apparent display of defiance from the bankers will not rest well with the public or other figures who have expressed the urgency for reforms.

Billionaire Investor George Soros yesterday attacked bankers, accusing them of being "tone deaf" to public perception.
