Bank Claim: Bankers show a 'glaring absence of ethics'

Bankers should be forced to take a Hippocratic style oath in order to restore faith and public confidence in the sector.

That is the opinion of fund manager Andrew Tulloch, joint managing partner at First State Investments, who yesterday told Scottish MPs that an ethical code could be an effective alternative to restrictive legal regulations.

He told ministers there is a "glaring absence of ethics" in the banking sector, something he and the wider public are keen to address.

Mr Tulloch commented: "As a result, the financial sector has become almost completely detached from the real world," according to the Scotsman.

In a detailed paper co-written by colleague David Gait, Mr Tulloch listed a number of proposals and suggestions surrounding a moral "oath".

According to the news provider, the pledge would see financial services workers sign up to a promise to "treat my clients at all times as I would wish to be treated".

His comments follow the Royal Bank of Scotland's decision to continue paying out large bonuses, in the form of shares, despite the public backlash.
