Bank Charges: Bail out bank doubles staff salary

The part-nationalised Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has been accused of substantially increasing the pay packets of its top performers.

RBS, which is 84 per cent taxpayer-owned following a string of government bailouts, has allegedly awarded a 100 per cent salary hike to key investment bankers, according to the Scotsman.

The news provider reveals that a "significant number" of the bank's 16,800-strong investment banking division are in-line to receive a pay increase over the next month.

A spokesman for the bank commented: "While we review salaries against market benchmarks, we treat each member of staff individually rather than making wholesale pay increases."

The revelation comes amid mounting public anger at RBS after it emerged the bank had set aside a £1.3 billion bonus pool for staff based on their 2009 performances, despite reporting a loss of £3.6 billion for the same period.

Westminster's Scottish Affairs Committee recently slammed RBS and fellow taxpayer-saved bank Lloyds Baking Group for displaying "unacceptable behaviour" to consumers despite being kept afloat by public money.
