Bank Reclaim: Banks to be heavily policed by FSA

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) is to launch a major recruitment drive in a bid to arm itself for better policing of the UK banks.

In what appears to be a crackdown on destructive banking behaviour, which has seen billion pound losses coupled with high-scale bonus payouts, the authority has announced plans to take on over 400 new members of staff to supervise the British banking sector.

Commenting on the proposals, FSA chief executive Hector Sants said: "This proactive approach to supervision requires significantly more people than the old reactive model, and those individuals must be of a higher quality and supported by more sophisticated systems.

"If society wants a more proactive approach it must accept that it will have a larger and more expensive regulator."

The part-nationalised banks the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) have drawn the attention of the FSA recently.

Mr Sants slammed the taxpayer-saved institutions for displaying "shameless" multimillion pound bonus bonanzas despite posting a combined loss of almost £10 billion for their 2009 performances.
