Credit card claim: Debt attitudes 'have changed'

Consumers thinking of initiating a credit card claim are keeping closer tabs on their expenditure.

This is the suggestion of the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), whose spokesman said that more people are preferring to pay any outstanding debts when they can rather than letting them accumulate.

"Consumer attitudes to debt have changed," he stated.

The spokesman was commenting after figures from the Bank of England revealed that consumer credit increased by £500 million last month, with credit card lending having risen by £400 million.

According to the CCCS spokesman, this is not a sign that consumers are returning to pre-recession levels of expenditure, but simply an indicator that the market as a whole has improved.

"CCCS data published in its recent statistical yearbook shows that among consumers coming to the charity for help, people actually owe less on average than before," he went on to say.

The Bank of England also revealed that the annual growth rate of consumer credit increased by 0.3 percentage points to 0.2 per cent.
