Credit Card Charges: To be or not to be for cheque guarantees?

With analysts predicting that the use of cheque payments will continue to phase out over the next decade of consumer spending, one bank has already got the ball rolling.

Santander, which owns Abbey and Alliance & Leicester, announced yesterday that it is to remove the cheque guarantee stamp from its new credit cards.

The sign, which usually appears as a hologram of Shakespeare's head, allows those writing a cheque payment to offer the recipient a guarantee of up to £250, depending on the terms and conditions.

Santander said it is initiating a phased approach to removing the guarantee, which it hopes will make the changes "manageable" for customers.

However, it is unlikely the news will be welcomed by everyone.

Many independent businesses such as window cleaners and gardeners regularly accept cheque payment and the guarantee stamp is they only form of proof they have that their efforts have not been in vain.
