Bank claims: UK banks 'wrongly' denying basic bank accounts

UK banks have no legal reason for refusing to give basic accounts to those who have been made recently bankrupt, it has been claimed.

A Citizens Advice report revealed that only two out of 17 banks allowed those who had recently been declared bankrupt to open a basic account.

These accounts allow wages or benefits to be paid in and customers can set up direct debits, although they will not be awarded an overdraft or cheque book.

Consumers without a basic bank account will find it harder to find employment as wages can not be transferred electronically.

Gillian Guy, chief executive of Citizens Advice, expressed her belief that not having basic banking services can be detrimental.

She said: "Most people take having a bank account for granted, but without access to one, basic tasks such as receiving wages or benefits and paying bills can become huge and costly obstacles to overcome, particularly for people who are often at a vulnerable point in their lives."

Bankruptcy applications have risen by 249 per cent in the past ten years, resulting in even less people accessing basic accounts.
