PPI: Bank chiefs to form lending taskforce

Six UK bank chiefs are set to form a new taskforce designed to help increase lending to smaller companies.

The new group will assess applications for credit by firms and make recommendations in order to help boost bank funding and stimulate the economy.

Stephen Green, head of the British Bankers' Association and chairman of HSBC, wrote of his intentions in a letter to George Osborne.

He said: "There is a real need to make sure that viable businesses are able to obtain the finance they need to support the recovery of the UK economy."

Smaller businesses will be provided with advice and support to help them grow and expand during the economic downturn.

Mid-sized firms which have a turnover in excess of £100 million will also benefit from increased access to finance.

The taskforce will report its findings to the chancellor in October.
