Bank claims: HMRC issues warning over phone scam

A group of thieves is attempting to steal taxpayer's bank details in a telephone scam, it has been revealed.

The group pretend to be from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and inform consumers that they will be issued with a tax rebate if they hand over their account details.

They can then use the details to make significant withdrawals from the account or sell the confidential information.

Chris Hopson, director of customer contact at HMRC, said the firm only ever communicate via post when handling tax rebates.

He said: "We never use telephone calls, emails or external companies in these circumstances. We strongly urge anyone receiving such a phone call not to give any information to the caller, but report it to the police straightaway."

Mr Hopson also advised taxpayers to forward any bogus emails onto HMRC.

In the last 18 months, similar scams have been uncovered across the UK as well as Mexico, South Korea, the US, and Japan.
