Bank Claims: Consumers will still be 'outraged' by bonuses despite regulation

UK consumers will still be outraged at banker bonuses despite new regulations, according to an expert.

The latest report from the Institute of International Finance (IIF) revealed that the regulation of bankers' bonuses within wholesale banks has improved, with greater efforts being made to ensure financial rewards are relative to performance.

Despite the majority of banks achieving standards set by regulatory body the Financial Stability Board in 2009, the IIF claimed the legislation would not restrict individual payouts.

Chris Roebuck, visiting professor of leadership at Cass Business School, stated how the organisation's report will not counteract public disgust over excessive bonuses.

"It's not really regulation that is going to stop the public perceiving the bankers are greedy. The likelihood is that no matter what you do with banking regulation, you are unlikely to get banking bonuses down to a level that the general public is going to be completely happy with," he said.

Research from the Office for National Statistics showed bonus payments across the UK had risen by £8 billion between December 2009 and April 2010 compared to the same period during the previous year.
