Loan claim: UK banks fail to make top ten of safest financial institutions

UK banks failed to be ranked among the top ten safest financial institutions in the world, it has been revealed.

Global Finance conducted a survey of long-term credit ratings and total assets owned by 500 global firms, with only three UK banks making the top 50.

Britain's biggest bank HSBC was listed at 19, with Barclays at 34 and Nationwide building society ranked at number 46.

Gemrna firm KfW was considered to be the safest bank in the world, followed by French bank Caisse des Depots et Consignations and Bank Nederlandse Gemeenten of the Netherlands.

Joseph Giarraputo, Global Finance's publisher, said: "Banks that have strengthened their liquidity positions and the quality and quantity of their capital are recognised in these rankings.

"More than ever, customers around the world are viewing long-term creditworthiness as the key feature of banks with which they do business."
