Bank claims: HMRC made 'no mistakes' during tax blunder

The chief executive of HM Revenue and Customs has claimed the organisation made "no mistakes" during the recent tax blunder.

HMRC has miscalculated the tax owed by six million Britons, with those affected either having to pay an average of £1,400 or set to receive a refund for overpaying.

During a grilling by the Treasury Select Committee, HMRC boss Dame Lesley Strathie claimed her staff made "no mistakes" in the lead up to the event.

Furthermore, Ms Lesley suggested that it is unfair to compare the HMRC to private firms which can choose their customers.

She said: "In any commercial business, you will have a customer strategy. You will decide which customers you want to acquire and which customers you want to divest yourself of."

The HMRC also revealed that a total of 24 million taxpayers could have had their PAYE bills miscalculated in the past five years.

In addition to the six million who are currently affected by the incident, a further 17.9 million tax cases are unresolved, with HMRC aiming to process these by 2012.
