Loan Protection: HMRC support service criticised

A UK taxation body has expressed its concern over the strength of the support services provided by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) has claimed taxpayers looking for advice and guidance on individual self-assessment tax returns may have "difficulties getting through to HMRC help lines".

George Crozier, external relations manager at CIOT, claimed there are growing concerns that HMRC may not be providing a sufficient support service.

"Not everyone's in a position to afford a professional tax advisor or someone to do it for them. If HMRC want people to fill in accurate and timely tax returns they need to have access to help and support to enable them to do that," he said.

Mr Crozier recommended that internet users should consider online tax returns as they are "easier", while taxpayers looking to apply by post may already be too late.

The deadline for paper self-assessment tax returns is October 31st. HMRC recently reiterated that late submissions will face a £100 fine.
