Loan Claim: Debt problems can have 'negative effect' on consumer's health

Debt problems can have a negative effect on a consumer's mental and emotional health, it has been claimed.

Una Farrell spokeswoman for the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), expressed her belief that more Britons are facing debt problems in the current economic climate.

"A lot of our clients are in emotional distress when they come to us, and that often goes hand in hand with debt problems. We have been doing more research to look into those links," she said.

"There have always been people who have come to us who are very distressed, but it is timely now to do something about it."

CCCS launches a new service called Debt Remedy this week, which will automatically screen people for signs of depression and anxiety as they seek financial help.

Workers for the service will refer callers to professional help where necessary.
