PPI claim: Inflation 'expected'

The recent increase in inflation was expected, an expert has said.

Jasmine Birtles, founder of consumer website, claims everyone knows prices have increased and that it is beyond the control of anyone in the country.

She said: "It's something that has been expected for a while. We have seen food prices continue to go up because of global factors, and of course fuel has gone up and VAT on everything.

"We should be grateful that it hasn't gone past the four per cent mark."

On January 18th, the Office for National Statistics announced that Consumer Price Index annual inflation stood at 3.7 per cent in December, an increase of 0.4 per cent compared to November.

Commenting on the inflation increase was Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress.

He said that it would make a difficult year for workers in the UK even harder and that it is time Chancellor George Osborne reconsiders the VAT increase.
