Payment Protection: Brits spending thousands on supporting others

Consumers who are currently trying to get payment protection refunds may not be surprised to hear that Brits are spending thousands every year supporting others.

Research by Scottish Provident has found that the average Brit will spend £10,339 every year supporting those who are financially dependent on them.

The findings showed that over 15 million adults in Britain currently have people who rely on them financially and that this costs them 39 per cent of their gross income.

Susan Barclay, head of marketing at Scottish Provident, commented: "With such a high proportion of an earner's gross income spent on those that they care for, it is vital that financial providers are protected so their dependents also have a robust financial safety net in place.

"By not doing this they could be seriously risking their financial security as well as that of their dependents."

The research also revealed that only 45 per cent of people who have dependants have life cover in place.
