Bank charges: Couples have a number of ways to sort out their finances

Couples at risk of facing bank charges have been told there are a number of ways that they can organise their households' finances.

According to the Debt Advice Foundation, sharing your finances with someone else does not necessarily have to be difficult.

David Rodger, managing director of the group, explained that there are a number of ways couples can choose to arrange their finances, from a 50/50 split, to one that "directly reflects their earnings".

He added that the key thing is to ensure bills are paid on time, noting: "It's important to remember that if the loan is in your name you will be liable for the repayments in full if you break up."

Mr Rodger concluded: "What's important is ensuring that bills are paid on time to avoid the pressure of unpaid debt and mounting interest payments."

He was speaking after research by indicated that a one in three women (35 per cent) in cohabiting relationships pay more than half of their household's bills.
