Credit card charges: Scotland in 'better financial position' than UK

People in Scotland may not have as much trouble with credit card charges because their country is in a better financial position than the UK is.

This is the fifth year that Scotland has been in a better financial position than the UK, figures from the Government and Expenditure Revenue Scotland 2009/10 show.

Scottish finance secretary John Swinney said: "Scotland has now been in a stronger financial position than the UK as a whole for each of the last five years.

"Scotland still contributed far more to the UK exchequer than our share of population, which underlines the breadth and strength of Scotland's finances, and the opportunities of financial responsibility and independence."

He added that the Scottish government has run a "balanced budget" since 2007 and that successive UK governments have not.

Scotland's budget balance in 2009/10 was a deficit of £9 billion, while the UK's was a deficit of £107.3 billion.
