Bank charges: British Gas price hike 'will push thousands into fuel poverty'

British Gas customers may well end up experiencing bank charges as the energy supplier has hiked its prices once again.

The company has put the price of gas up by 18 per cent and its electricity up by 16 per cent.

Commenting on this announcement was Mike O'Connor CBE, chief executive of Consumer Focus, a statutory consumer organisation formed in 2008.

He said: "This price rise will send a shock wave across the country. The impact on customers will be severe, piling more pressure on severely stretched household budgets and pushing hundreds of thousands more households into fuel poverty.

"Consumers simply don't trust that energy companies have customers' interests at heart and rightly question whether prices are fair."

Mr O'Connor added that consumers do not trust that energy companies are looking out for their customers, explaining that British Gas' wholesale costs are still a third lower than they were at their 2008 peak.

Despite this, he said, the company's prices have risen by around 44 per cent for gas and 21 per cent for electricity.
