More women claiming PPI refunds?

Women may be more likely to claim PPI refunds because new figures from the Office for National Statistics show women have lost thousands of jobs during the recession compared to men.

The figures show that since the end of the recession, women have lost 218,000 jobs, while men have gained 768,000 positions.

In Yorkshire, 37,600 women lost their job, while in Wales, 30,300 were left without work.

It is though that one of the reasons women are loosing out is because sectors most affected by the downturn, such as retail and accommodation, are predominantly dominated by female staff.

Experts have also said that this could get even worse, as the government cuts back 400,000 jobs from the state workforce over the next five years.

According to, in June last year 6,829,000 women were working full time, compared to 11,154,300 men.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, told the news provider: "This analysis shows the recession was a devastating blow for millions of workers and their families."
