Holidaying Brits risk facing steep credit card charges

British holidaymakers could find themselves facing vast credit card charges if they are not careful.

According to, Brits collectively face fees of up to £457 million a year for using their credit and debit cards while they are abroad.

More than a fifth (21 per cent) of Brits are also risking bank charges by using their debit card to withdraw cash when they're away, despite the significant charges attached to doing so.

Approximately four in ten people (38 per cent) use their credit cards abroad, even though one in ten Brits does not understand the costs involved.

Stefan Maryniak, personal finance expert at, said: "Sorting out your spending money is often the last thing on a holidaymaker's list, but if you don't do it or leave it to the last minute it can cost you dear.

"Fees from using your credit or debit card abroad can be the holiday souvenir from hell, but there are a number of ways to avoid them. If you plan ahead you'll end up with more money in your pocket."

One way to minimise charges is to use a prepaid credit card, which can be loaded with a set balance before you set off. ADNFCR-2776-ID-800632079-ADNFCR
