Bank claim: Half of employees do not take advantage of benefit packages

Workers currently in the process of making a bank claim may well be among those who are not taking advantage of the benefit packages offered to them by their employers.

According to research by Vebnet and Standard Life found that 52 per cent of employees do not understand the value of their benefits package, while 25 per cent of 18-24 year olds make no use of them at all.

Stephen Ingledew, corporate managing director of Standard Life, said: "Many employers invest a considerable amount of cost and effort in providing a quality benefits package. Unfortunately a significant number of employees are not recognising the value.

"The research clearly demonstrates the need for employers to review how they engage employees with their benefits."

Other than salary, the benefits valued most by employees were pensions, flexi-time and bonuses.

Despite this research, 64 per cent of employees said a benefits package was important when choosing a job.
