Bank charges: E.ON announce price hikes

Bank charges may be a big concern of those people worried about heating their homes this winter, following E.ON's announcement that it is to increase its energy prices.
E.ON revealed it will be increasing its gas prices by 18.1 per cent and its electricity by 11.4 per cent.

This means that four of the 'big six' energy suppliers have increased their prices by similar amounts.

Mike O'Connor, chief executive of Consumer Focus, said: "Yet another price rise will leave the average energy bill weighing in at £1250 a year. Many consumers worry how they will afford to keep their homes warm this winter given other price rises and flat or falling incomes.

"Customers need to know whether these increases are warranted."

He noted that Ofgem has said it is prepared to refer the energy market to the Competition Commission if it is necessary.

Consumers need to know that the price increases are fair if they are to be "stomached", Mr O'Connor concluded.
