Bank charges: Debit card charges 'a raw deal'

People who have ended up paying bank charges may be among those who have been charged for using their debit card.

According to a spokesman from, consumers who are charged by companies for using their debit card to pay for things are getting a raw deal.

They said: "I accept that businesses might sometimes have to pay small processing fees when accepting payment by debit card, but the surcharge some thrust upon their customers can be totally disproportionate.

"For example, Ryanair charges £6 per passenger per one-way flight, which is ludicrous."

The spokesperson added that it would be much better if companies raised their prices rather than profit from "underhand tactics".

Consumers should also be aware of the surcharges when spending overseas, as most cards charge around 2.75 per cent, they also noted.

However, the spokesperson warned that a Halifax debit card incurs a £1.50 for every transaction made abroad.
