Bank charges news: Britons sacrifice heating to pay mortgages

Many households are sacrificing heating in order to cut down on energy bills so they have more cash free to avoid bank charges for late mortgage payments.

According to new research conducted by YouGov on behalf of Shelter, 22 per cent of people have trimmed their electricity and gas consumption so they can afford to pay for their accommodation.

This is in addition to the 34 per cent who admitted to spending less on food so that they did not fall behind on repayments.

Chief executive at the charity Campbell Robb labelled the findings as "staggering".

"It demonstrates the tough choices families are now having to make, between heating their home, putting a decent meal on the table or paying for the roof over their head," he commented.

A recent survey undertaken by the Money Advice Trust indicated that 20 per cent of the UK's adult population are facing a constant battle to manage their debt, with 1.54 million people seeking professional financial advice from the firm in 2011.
