PPI complaints grow sharply in Bradford

The number of payment protection insurance (PPI) complaints being made by Bradford residents has risen sharply in the past year.

Bradford MP David Ward has criticised banks and insurers in the Yorkshire city for their "diabolically bad handling of complaints", as the Bradford Telegraph and Argus revealed that the number of cases being brought forward by consumers in the area grew by 78 per cent in the past 12 months.

Official complaints to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) totalled 1,875 in 2011 - a rise of 74 per cent when compared with 2009.

Mr Ward told the news provider that organisations that mis-sold PPI cover to customers showed a "shameful" lack of respect for the trust between consumers and their banks.

"I'm glad that many constituents have now successfully had money refunded but it should never have come to this," he was quoted as saying.

This trend is not confined to Bradford, however, as the Scotsman recently obtained data from the FOS that indicated that PPI mis-selling cases have become far more common north of the border too.
