Holidaymakers warned about credit card charges

British holidaymakers need to be increasingly aware of sizeable credit card charges when using their plastic abroad.

Bosses at Sainsbury's Travel Money have suggested that pre-paid credit cards are more often than not subject to fees when being used to purchase goods in a foreign land.

Indeed, the organisation found that 65.3 per cent of pre-paid currency cards carry charges when a person attempts to access their money when overseas.

"Using debit or credit cards abroad can be costly as a number of providers can charge fees purely to access your own cash and that's before looking at other incurred costs," commented David Barrett of Sainsbury's Travel Money.

Credit card charges have been a hot topic recently, after the government moved to ensure that banks are not attaching confusing fees to their plastic products.

In order to add a greater degree of transparency, the authorities have introduced the Consumer Rights Directive, which restricts banks from issuing surprise last-minute charges.
