Some airlines 'still have excessive credit card charges'

Airlines are increasing or introducing excessive credit card charges, despite government regulation pledging to make these illegal.

Research from Which? revealed a number of these companies are still making their customers pay surcharges for use of a credit card, which can often be over 240 times the amount it costs airlines to process these transactions.

In December 2011, following recommendations from the consumer advocacy group and the Office of Fair Trading, the government pledged to tackle opaque, misleading credit card charges, although a "small" fee that covers the cost of a payment model is still permissible.

At the time, financial secretary to the Treasury Mark Hoban said: "We want to make sure that consumers paying by card do not have to pay the excessively high surcharges being imposed on them by some airlines and other businesses."

Which? claimed BMIbaby, Flybe, Ryanair and Jet2 have all increased their surcharges since March 2011, when the organisation initially submitted a complaint about the issue.

Furthermore, British Airways previously did not increase its prices for customers who used a credit card, but it now has bank charges of £4.50 per passenger, the organisation declared.
