Woman defrauded in PPI refunds scam

A 42-year-old woman in Edinburgh has been defrauded of a three-figure sum by a company claiming to deal with payment protection insurance (PPI) claims.

Lothian and Borders Police has urged members of the public to be aware of this scam, which involved the female being called at home by a person claiming to be from a PPI refunds company.

She was informed she was eligible to receive a payment protection refund and was asked to pay money to the company using Ukash vouchers, which enable individuals to purchase services and goods online without disclosing their financial details.

However, the woman failed to receive a PPI refund, so officers highlighted the con to help others avoid falling victim to the scam.

"The issue of PPI refunds is a very current topic and criminals will look to exploit any new opportunity to obtain money or personal details from members of our communities," a spokesman for the police force said.
