Bank claims: Barclays' Pingit open to all Brits

Customers of banks and building societies throughout the UK will now be able to incur credit card charges and make other forms of transactions using their mobile phone numbers, thanks to the extension of Barclays Pingit service.

This initiative enables people to receive and send cash to others without sharing bank details but by utilising their telephones.

It is open to everyone in the UK, so long as the person has a current account and mobile phone based in the country and is over 16 years old.

The innovative service was first launched in February and has been downloaded at least 400,000 times since then.

It is freely available from the Android Market, BlackBerry App World and Apple App Store, while people who do not have a smartphone can register over the internet so they can receive money.

Recently, managing director of Global Prepaid Exchange Kevin Harrington predicted in the near future, "we'll have peer to peer payment systems, which we can access through our mobile phones".
