Police warn of bank refunds phone scam

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary has warned members of the public to beware of bogus callers who are claiming to be able to help individuals receive bank refunds.

An elderly female in Garlieston received five separate telephone calls in 15 minutes from a man who said he could get her bank charges back.

When a relative of the woman took over the phone, the man become abusive and threatening.

A female from Stranraer also received a similar call from a man who requested her bank details, while another woman in the area was contacted by a different male asking to borrow money.

Another woman in the area was called by a man telling her she owed money, while a Thornhill female was phoned by someone telling them they had a virus on their computer.

"I congratulate all these people who handled these calls in the right manner - by simply not entertaining them," operation commander for Galloway chief inspector Irvine Watson said.

Earlier this month, an Edinburgh woman was scammed by a bogus caller claiming to deal with payment protection insurance refunds.
