PPI spam text messages 'should be ignored'

People who receive spam text messages informing them they could be eligible for a payment protection insurance (PPI) refund ought to ignore the communication.

This is according to money-saving expert Martin Lewis, who wrote in the Telegraph that replying to these texts "risks crystallising the fact you're an active recipient on their databases".

However, people could forward the message to their mobile network provider's reporting number, he declared.

The specialist pointed out this is 87726 for Vodafone, 7726 for T-Mobile, Orange and O2, or 37726 for Three.

Although this will not directly prevent the PPI claims scam messages from arriving, it should help in the long-term, Mr Lewis claimed.

Furthermore, the Information Commissioner can be forwarded these PPI refund texts, he pointed out.

This government body will use the data it receives to develop a picture of the spam communications.

It notes the more information it is given, the higher the likelihood there is that it will be able to identify the companies sending these unwanted marketing messages.
