Bank claims: Energy users 'should compare prices'

People's budgets could already be stretched due to credit card charges and loan claims, so they may wish to use comparison sites when deciding upon an energy supplier.

Money saving expert Martin Lewis explained gas and electricity is still the same, regardless of the business that is bringing it to a person.

"The only thing that changes across different companies is the customer service and the billing," he added.

Currently, a typical household is spending £1,320 every 12 months on their power, although this figure is around £140 lower for members of the public on the cheapest tariffs, the expert pointed out.

Therefore, individuals should go to a price comparison site that has been approved by Consumer Focus and "stop being charged for apathy or inertia", Mr Lewis stated.

Another way for homeowners to reduce energy bills is to fit lagging in the loft and wall cavities, National Insulation Association chief executive Neil Marshall recently said.
