Bank refunds: Rising fuel bills 'could increase people's debts'

Brits may have to endure loan charges because of rising energy bills.

Citizens Advice and Consumer Focus have warned these rising price of fuel could increase the number of people who are in debt.

Four in ten respondents to a poll by the organisations claimed they spent more money on power during the last winter than they did one year earlier, while nearly one-third said their bill was larger than they had expected.

The groups advised individuals who find they are struggling to pay these charges to contact their energy company and tell them what they can afford.

Furthermore, they ought to check they are receiving all of the tax credits and benefits they are entitled to and could consider switching to another tariff or energy supplier.

Money saving expert Martin Lewis recently pointed out the only differences between power companies are their customer service and prices.

"If you are worried you can't afford to pay your bills and they are mounting up, don't suffer in silence," chief executive of Citizens Advice Gillian Guy said.
