Bank charges: Interns 'should be paid minimum wage'

In an age where young people are struggling with larger student loan claims and escalating bank charges, firms hiring interns might wish to consider paying them the minimum wage.

Marketing and communications director at Inspiring Interns Andrew Scherer pointed out the jobs market is "very tough", with it set to become even more difficult following the addition of another 250,000 graduates into the labour market.

He claimed his organisation receives between 300 and 400 applications for internships every day, which is partly because his company is growing but also because of the worsening job situation.

"There's a national minimum wage and all internships should adhere to that," the specialist declared, arguing at the very least, these positions ought to pay for travel and expenses.

However, a few companies will always "take the opportunity to exploit people" because of the public's desperation to enter employment, Mr Scherer remarked.

The national minimum wage for people aged over 21 is currently £6.08 per hour, although this figure falls to £2.60 for apprentices.
